number of new appointments following its Annual General Meeting, Mr. Stuart Lowden is the new Vice Chairman replacing Mr. Jim Harrower.
The Security Industry Authority (SIA) state that £400,000 in money is unclaimed by security operatives. The SIA is urging thousands of its licence holders to claim back their share of the £400,000 waiting to be returned to them in licence fee refunds.
Operatives holding more than one SIA licence can claim a 50% refund on their second or subsequent licence. This means a refund of £122.50 for each licence granted. Thousands of operatives have obtained two or more licences and have failed to claim back a refund on the £245.00 licence application fee. The SIA is advising licence holders to act now and make a claim.
THE SIA APPROVED CONTRACTORS SCHEME
Many end users of Private Security Companies are confused with the SIA's two main responsibilities that are:-
- Compulsory licensing of individual operatives licence for their relevant sector
- Management of its Approved Contractors Scheme (ACS) for the Security Companies who choose to apply for the ACS status.
The SIA's objectives of the Approved Contractors Scheme are to raise performance standards and to assist the Private Security Industry in developing new opportunities. The SIA Approved Contractors Scheme gives the opportunity to those who achieves the ACS status to distinguish themselves as one of the best providers of private security services in Great Britain.
The following statistics are up-dated every month on the SIA's website and may not correctly reflect the correct position; the total number of approved contractors in security guarding, as of the 31st August 2007 was 345.
INTERNATIONAL THREAT LEVEL
The current terrorist threat is SEVERE. The Home Office, along with its security services MI5 & MI6, has launched a threat level system to keep the public informed of the suspected level of threat to the UK from terrorists. The system also helps the police and other law enforcement agencies to determine their response and prepare themselves for a terrorist incident.
The threat levels are:-
- Critical - an attack is imminent
- Severe - an attach is highly likely
- Substantial - an attack is a strong possibility
- Moderate - an attack is possible but not likely
- Low - an attack is unlikely
